These entities are strategically positioned to enhance transport and logistics services, thereby bolstering trade competitiveness, tourism, and industrialization efforts. Playing vital roles in transporting critical commodities like fertilizer and other strategic goods, they serve as flagship carriers, making significant contributions to the country's economic development and connectivity.

Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) stands as Africa’s fastest-growing airline. With a legacy spanning over seventy eight years, Ethiopian has emerged as a premier carrier on the continent, renowned for its unparalleled efficiency and operational achievements. Established on December 21, 1945, Ethiopian Airlines Group (EAL) commenced operations on April 8, 1946, and proudly serves as the flag carrier of Ethiopia. Throughout its illustrious 78 years, Ethiopian Airlines Group has consistently outperformed, maintaining profitability for nearly every year of its existence. Company description 

The Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Service Enterprise (ESL) was formed through the merger of four enterprises which were working independently in the transport and logistics sector. These were Ethiopian Shipping Lines Share Company, Ethiopian Maritime and Transit Service Enterprise, Dry Port Enterprise; and the former Comet Transport Share Company. ESL provides shipping, logistics (freight forwarding etc.), land transport, dry port operations and management and other related services. 

ESL boasts a diverse fleet comprising numerous vessels, heavy-duty trucks, and sea and dry port facilities, enabling it to deliver efficient sea and land transport services alongside sea and dry port operations. Presently, ESL operates 10 general-purpose cargo vessels and over 440 heavy-duty trucks, complemented by eight ports and terminals offering international standard services. As Africa’s premier shipping company, ESL serves as a vital link connecting the continent with other global markets through trade, proudly flying the national flag at sea. Recognized as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s economy, ESL plays a pivotal role in facilitating the transportation of import and export goods via sea and land routes, providing essential dry port services, and offering a range of logistical solutions crucial for economic development.

Company description 

Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise (ETRE) manages federal toll roads and has been providing toll road services 24/7 since September 2011. 

Ethiopian Toll Roads Enterprise started its operations by managing 78 km of Addis Ababa-Adama expressway and in June 2019. When it took over and started managing the 223 km long Dire Dawa – Dewele toll road, the total toll road coverage increased to 301 km. The first phase of the Mojo-Hawasa Expressway, the 90-kilometer Mojo-Batu Expressway, which began service in September 2014, increased the road coverage of the enterprise to 391 kilometers.

ETRE was established with the following objectives: 

  • To provide toll road services to road users.
  •  To operate and ensure the maintenance of toll roads.
  •  To operate service stations constructed within the boundaries of toll roads.
  • To undertake other related activities necessary for the attainment of its objectives.

Overview of business units 

ETRE has a single business unit with the basic functions of toll road operations and toll road maintenance and management. 

 

Company description 

The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC), established in 2007, is the state-owned enterprise responsible for developing and operating Ethiopia’s railway infrastructure and services. ERC manages both passenger and freight transport, including key projects like the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway and the Addis Ababa Light Rail. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, the corporation aims to create an integrated, high-capacity railway network to provide competitive and affordable transport solutions, thereby supporting the nation’s economic and social development.
